Wedding Dress Meltdown! So I bought my dress in February for my April 2009 wedding. Granted I did buy it early but im in a graduate program and a lot of other things going on in my life so it was one of those "now or much later" deals. When I bought it, fit like a glove..a little room to spare but not much. We bought it off the rack because we saved around 400 bucks! Anyways onto the disaster...I took off half-a-day today to do some wedding related business. When I was at the program store, I decided to go try my dress on just for giggles. I go in, and it doesnt zip! There is two inches from it reaching the top! To beat it all the lady helping me laughed at me. Now I know that I have 6 months until my alterations begin but im freaking out. When I tried it on I had no bra of any kind on so maybe that would help. I am a size 34DD so its not like i can just push em in. Any advice on what to do? How to lose weight in the bust or good bras that squish boobies haha. ( For reference here is the dress ) Current Mood: disappointed |

Slaughterhouse-Five - by Vonnegut, Water for Elephants - by Gruen, Roswell High series by Metz 22) Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut -Novel, Historical, Sci fi (288 pages) - Kurt Vonnegut's absurdist classic Slaughterhouse-Five introduces us to Billy Pilgrim, a man who becomes unstuck in time after he is abducted by aliens from the planet Tralfamadore. In a plot-scrambling display of virtuosity, we follow Pilgrim simultaneously through all phases of his life, concentrating on his (and Vonnegut's) shattering experience as an American prisoner of war who witnesses the firebombing of Dresden. – From Amazon - I can kind of understand why this is considered a classic. The symbolism was interesting, but I didn't like it. It shifted too much for my liking and was all around too weird for me. (2/5) 23) Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen - Novel, Historical, random (355 pages) - The novel, told in flashback by nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski, recounts the wild and wonderful period he spent with the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth, a traveling circus he joined during the Great Depression. When 23-year-old Jankowski learns that his parents have been killed in a car crash, leaving him penniless, he drops out of Cornell veterinary school and parlays his expertise with animals into a job with the circus, where he cares for a menagerie of exotic creatures. He also falls in love with Marlena, one of the show's star performers—a romance complicated by Marlena's husband, the unbalanced, sadistic circus boss who beats both his wife and the animals Jankowski cares for. Despite her often clichéd prose and the predictability of the story's ending, Gruen skillfully humanizes the midgets, drunks, rubes and freaks who populate her book. -from Amazon - I liked this book. I don’t think it’s amazing like a lot of reviews I’ve read, but good. (3.5/5) 24-33 Roswell High series by Melinda Metz 24) The Outsider by Melinda Metz -170 pages 25) The Wild One by Melinda Metz -171 pages 26) The Seeker by Melinda Metz -168 pages 27) The Watcher by Melinda Metz -171 pages 28) The Intruder by Melinda Metz - 176 pages 29) The Stowaway by Melinda Metz - 168 pages 30) The Vanished by Melinda Metz - 167 pages 31) The Rebel by Melinda Metz - 168 pages 32) The Dark One by Melinda Metz - 170 pages 33) The Salvation (Roswell High No. 10) by Melinda Metz - 168 pages -Roswell High is a young adult book series written by Melinda Metz and published by Pocket Books. The 10-book series chronicles the adventures of three teen aliens and their human friends, who attend the fictional Ulysses F. Olsen High in Roswell, New Mexico. The Roswell High books served as inspiration for the television series Roswell (1999-2002), also known as Roswell High in some countries, which in turn spawned a number of spin-off books of its own. -from wikipedia - I loved the Roswell series when it was on TV. So when I got to a chance to download these e-books for free I grabbed them. Very quick read. They were great fluff books to read – I didn’t have to think at all, but not for all. (3.5/5) |

Herbal Bouquet Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone here has used Herbs in their bouquets, or boutonnieres? Which did you use, how did you choose which ones you used and what did your bouquet look like on the day? Did you use flowers as well as herbs?
Anyone have pictures of their bouquets/boutonnieres with herbs?

Post-wedding post First, here are our photographer's pictures from the day. (The password is laura). http://continuumphotography.smugmug.com/gallery/5243955_YZ5TW#319962250_7Bw8rOur wedding was small (38 guests + our photographers came to our wedding), and the size worked really well for us, since we felt close to everyone there and were able to talk to everyone. We had it in a restaurant--in their private party area. While I would have loved to have done something outside, I was scared about having to come up with a Plan B if anything went wrong. The Good: --Almost everything! --Almost everyone danced at least a little--and some people danced a lot! --There were no technical malfunctions (which I was a little scared about, since we had our ipod, and no real back-up plan). --It was so great seeing everyone --I met my wonderful nieces, or rather, they became my nieces! They are so sweet and so smart. --I had a really good time myself; I had time to eat, talk to people, dance, and everything else. --I was happy with all of our vendors. --We actually did Hava Nagila, and I was so happy! (My husband's family is Jewish, and some of my family is.) --The fish-eye take your own picture camera. --People became friends with each other at our wedding! --Our after-party was so much fun! --When our photographer took us outside for pictures (during the cocktail hour), people on the street applauded and cheered us--especially when I shouted, "We just got married!" The Eh (there was no bad, though): --One person forgot about our wedding and only came to the after-party, but I almost feel more bad about her feeling bad about it. --The person who had done my makeup trial wasn't scheduled to come in, even though I had an appointment with her. This was resolved easily enough (another person did my makeup, and it looked just as good as it had for the trial, only a teensy bit different), but it made me unexpectedly cry. And then, I didn't cry at the wedding. All in all, I guess this is a neutral point. --Lots of people were caught up in traffic jams, so some of our timing was off; the ceremony started about 15 minutes late (but no one complained). --My husband's sister forgot her reading, so we used our photographer's iphone to copy it from the net. (Crisis averted and all that.) --The sushi snacks and to-do set up list were accidentally left out (oops!) --I wish I had spent a little more time with some of my relatives, including my parents. --My dad accidentally said my sister's name instead of my name during his toast (no biggie, really). --I tried, but I couldn't sleep well at all(!) the night before (wonder why....) --The officiant was a little awkward during times of our ceremony, but he was more helpful than anything else, really. I feel like everyone has probably heard most of the advice I could give, but I will say that I was so glad that I brought flats to wear later during the reception. Also, I'm glad that we left on our honeymoon two days after our wedding. |

Books 30 - 32 30. Waking the Dead by Scott Spencer- Now I understand why so many people appreciate Scott Spencer's work. Thanks to a user on LJ for recommending I try again after my disappointment with Willing. Fielding Pierce is a man who wants to be a part of the system. When he falls in love with a woman who believes the system is flawed and devotes her self to working for those who can't fight for themselves, it would seem that there's no way the relationship would work. And it wasn't working when she was killed as part of collateral damage in a political assassination. This sets Fielding on a path of loving what he has lost, but at the same time, achieve his goal of playing the political game so well he ends up running for election for Congress, with all the right backers. Still clinging to the dream of what might have never been with Sarah, he appears to slowly be losing his grip on reality. The story is set for the most part in wintery Chicago, a place Spencer seems to know really well. He also has a good grasp of what it is to grieve for the future when the rest of the world has already moved on. 31. Death Masks:Book Five of the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher - This time around, Dresden goes in search of a very well known and very investigated sacred relic of the Roman Catholic church. That means Michael and a few other Knights of the Cross get involved, and in my opinion that always leads to a Dresden File that's a little better researched than the ones that don't use these characters. Also back for this book are Susan, who adds little to the plot but quite a bit to Dresden's character development, and my favorite supporting character, White Court vampire Thomas Raith. The plot isn't Butcher's strongest, but he makes great use of his Chicago setting in this book, including an off-season Wrigley Field. (Side note for fans of this series who also listen to Podcasts. Jim Butcher did a short "Meet The Writers" audio interview that is available through Barnes and Noble. He comes across as a very likable guy (not unlike Harry Dresden) and his explanation for how Bob's physical appearance was chosen is pure writer gold.) 32 The Wise Heart by Jack Kornfield - This was probably not the best book for me to choose as I switch from being curious about Buddhism to actively investigating it as a path I might want to follow, as it goes deep into the how Buddhism heals the troubled mind and skims the fundamentals. I still got a lot from it, possibly because I have a small background in Jungian psychology (I had no idea they shared so much) and also because Kornfield has so much experience in the are of Insightful Meditation that he's pretty much got an easy to understand example for every situation. So may examples they sometimes break the flow of the teaching of something he has entitled The Principles of Buddhist Psychology, but they do keep the book from getting mired down in psycho babble. The lessons at the end of each chapter are easy to follow and demonstrate that if someone does choose The Middle Way, it's not an overnight conversion. Be prepared to work on yourself. |

Guest list and invitation help! Well, we've set a date (June 28, 2009) and now we need to finalize the guest list. The ceremony venue can only have 35 people maximum. We haven't settled on a reception venue just yet.
The original plan was to not have my dad's side of the family there as I'm not close to any of them. It would be my mom's side of about 20-25, my dad and his wife and their kids, and then my FH's mom, dad, and brother. So a very small wedding with everyone invited to equal 34.
When I let my mom and dad know about the intended plan, they both got mad at me. "Your dad's side is family! They should be invited!" my mom said. "My family would understand about the limited number for the ceremony, but why can't they come to the reception?" asked my dad.
I want the people there that I consider family. Family to me is being close and caring about each other, and I just don't feel that way about his side. To me, they're like the popular girls in grade school that snubbed their noses at you because you weren't smart enough or cool enough. But at the same time, I feel like I should invite them. I mean, they are technically family.
I'd just like some more opinions... So what do you all think? Invite or no?
And if so, how do I invite them so they know they'd only be going to the reception? Should I make two different sets of invitations one for the ceremony/reception and then one for just the reception guests? What's the etiquette for this?

Cake How much is everyone paying for cake? Our reception place does the catering, too, and if you don't use their baker, they charge $1.50 a slice plating fee. Their cake is $7 per person (our guest list is 115; hoping for 80-85, so that's almost $600 for the cake).
My mom thinks it's too much, but I think we won't find another baker cheap enough to justify the plating fee.
Thanks. |

Combined parent dances - any song ideas? Hi everyone! We are thinking about combining the father/daughter dance with the mother/son dance. Has anyone else done this? If so, what song did you/are you planning to use?
We are having a 5-piece swing/jazz band, so bonus points for anything that would sound good played by the band!
I hope all of the Americans have a wonderful 4th of July weekend! (and all of the non-Americans have a wonderful regular weekend) :-) |

Hair style Issue Hi Everyone! I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to style my hair for my July 19th 2008 wedding! I'm worried that my hair isn't grown out enough for the style I want and I was hoping to get opinions. :) Here's a couple pics! ( Read more... ) The hairstyle to the left was what I'm going for minus the tiara and about four inches of length. The poorly done MsPaint picture is what I'm hoping it would look like. The far right picture is the most recent pic of my hair. Please excuse the dopey-faced look lol. I don't think I'm going to be able to do the side-do without extensions. What are your experiences when it comes to getting extensions? I have naturally wavy hair and I'm going to be wearing a very long Mantilla veil with the clip about and inch or so past my hairline. Or if you don't recommend extensions is there another type of hairstyle that you would recommend? Thank you!! Jackie |

Self Catering So I want to cook my own food for my wedding; my mom and I have done it for a few parties before that had even more guests that we plan on having! I love to cook, my mom is awesome at it, and I am just the type of person who likes getting her hands nitty gritty with the details!
But almost every location I've looked at requires licensed caterers! It's driving me nuts; I don't want to poison me or my guests!
Does anyone have any tips for how to get around this? Or possible sites that might be a little more flexible? If you are in my area (NH/MA/VT), feel free to be specific, but any general advice would be great, too. |

Mother/Son Dance Does anyone know if there has been a good cover of BJ Thomas' "Mama"? And if you haven't heard it before it's a perfect Mother/Son Dance song!! ( Lyrics )Thanks in advance!! BTW: I also went dress shopping for the first time yesterday! Was NOT allowed to take pictures... Which I was pretty bummed about. Narrowed that stores' selections down to two from about 15 that I tried on. I'm not sold on either though, but my favorite was the first one I tried on. But I keep thinking about two of the ones I finally said no to. One was gold and very soft and sparkly, and the other was lace covered and neither was very ballgown/cinderella-y. :( |

Is anyone using a videographer? I did not hire one for our wedding. I am an extremely self-conscious person, and while I wanted to have the option to look at footage later on, I couldn't bear the thought of paying for something I hate.
Luckily I got my wish. My husband's boss videotaped a few parts, and my aunt and uncle also videotaped a few sections of our wedding. It's really hard to look at for me, but the worst part is that several family members on my side have copies of it. Ewwwww. I think I looked fat and sounded stupid in most of it. Chris, my hubby, still hasn't seen the one my family did because I'm that uncomfortable with it. My husband's parents used to record weddings, and my husband told me that the dvd's are supposed to be for the couple, not for other people. The only person I don't mind having a copy is our officiant because we're comfortable with him. And of course, in a few years, I may not feel the same way.
Are you guys recording? Why or why not? Actually, I wasn't sure that anyone really did that anymore at weddings. (But I'm not trying to talk any of you out of videotaping the wedding with my personal story!)
I have mixed feelings about mine, but maybe you guys might know something I don't. Right now I'm just glad that those who recorded our wedding also gave us other gifts besides the dvds! |

35. Jane Austen - Mansfield Park 35. Jane Austen - Mansfield Park (1814) (457pp)
It's been almost 15 years since I read any Jane Austen, although I read them all in the '80s. Mansfield Park was the one I could remember least, perhaps because so little actually happens in it. But wait -- that doesn't mean it isn't good! I was perplexed while I was reading it as to why I was loving it so much. Fanny Price, the heroine, is, as many have noted, so perfect as to be rather dull. The plot line is a little dull. And yet, somehow, Miss Austen pulls it off. It may have been the beauty of the prose, but I had a hard time putting it down. I did, however, realize that Fanny pretty much has to be right all the time for the plot to make sense. If she doesn't see through the Crawfords, as no one else does, the crux of the book is gone. The characters are quite lively and beautifully individualized, and the prose is addictive. I hated to see this one end, truly I did. :sigh: That said, I couldn't have enjoyed this twenty years ago, when I was a much less forgiving and more impatient reader.

68. Small Mediums at Large: The True Tale of a Family of Psychics Terry Iacuzzo (3/5)
Terry Iacuzzo is apparently one of the big psychics to the stars (and to other VIPs), although of course we have to take her word for it because she refuses to reveal who she's done readings for. This book is mainly a memoir of childhood and early adulthood, and details her strained relationship with her brother Frank (who was/is also a famous psychic) and the rest of her family, who also possess uncanny abilities. It's a rather difficult memoir for a skeptic to read. On the one hand, it's absolutely fascinating, and Iacuzzo has lead a pretty strange and interesting life. On the other hand, since it's a memoir, there's a complete lack of outside confirmation that any of the events described actually occurred. Members of the family apparently make astounding predictions, but since these predictions are all related after the fact, there's no way of knowing how much things have been manipulated. There's also no account of the many predictions that never came true. Overall, too, this just isn't particularly well-written. Subjects are picked up and dropped; people in fascinating or dangerous situations are described and then never mentioned again. Much of the strange behavior of Terry's family is never explained, and Terry is strangely unforthcoming about a lot of her own emotional and personal development. The result is muddled and unsatisfying, somewhat, but also weird enough that it's still worth the read.
69. Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Slayer, Interrupted Scott Lobdell (3/5)
This BtVS graphic novel is set in between the events of the movie and the start of the TV series. Buffy's mother and father read her diary and discover that she thinks she is the Slayer -- something that's CLEARLY insane. Buffy ends up committed to a mental institution, and in the process becomes more committed to her role as the Slayer. This was pretty entertaining, but nothing terribly grounbreaking. Solid story, solid art, worth reading, but not one for the ages.
70. A Wrinkle in Time Madeleine L'Engle (5/5)
This is a re-read, revisiting one of my favorites from my childhood. It holds up very well, and I still found it enchanting. I had forgotten, however, how absolutely abruptly it ends -- this frustrated me as a child, and it still frustrates me a bit now. |

Lost BM dress! I think I am about to throw up. Everything was going so well. Too well. Over a month ago, I sent a package to Argentina to one of my BMs who is studying down there. In it was her invitation, some frog stickers (she loves frogs) and, most importantly, her dress which she needed to get altered. It has not arrived. "Don't worry," she said. "Things move slowly down here," she said. So I didn't (I should have). I finally lost it. I called the USPS. "Hmm. It should have arrived within 10 days. You need to place an inquiry." I did. Then, the lady says that Argentina can take up to 60 days to respond to inquiries. Which means I may not know what happened to that package until a month after my wedding. Great. We're officially in crisis mode. I need to find a new dress stat. She originally ordered a navy Alfred Angelo in style number 6493. We need this dress stat. My wedding is on August 8th, and I'm hoping she can get it altered in the week she is here before the wedding. I am going to call the bridal shop when they open to have them look up the size (I think it was a 16). But seriously, I'm about to have a breakdown. I suppose, worst case scenario we tear apart Boston looking for any navy blue dress in the time she's here before the wedding, but I would really love to have this situation resolved before then. Holy god I hate suspense. Can you wonderful people tell me if there is any site online where I might find any AA dress in navy in that size which I can get in less than two weeks? Please? I'm off to scour ebay now. Edit: I called the bridal shop and they called AA. AA has the same gown in navy in one size smaller. They have assured me that there are two inches of extra fabric so it can be let out. The dress will ship today, and they are not charging me any rush fees. Also, I remembered that my mom's friend who always used to alter my clothes will be here a week before the wedding and I bet she's alter the dress for us. I'm going to call her later to find out if she'd be willing to do this! Thank you all for your help and well wishes. Current Mood: distressed |

Dreams/Photographer Meeting Thanks for the kind words on my freak-out post. We are definitely doing outdoor candid pictures at the beach when my fiance gets here in a week. He was surprisingly totally okay with that since we had wanted outdoor pictures anyway but never had taken any. Yay! Also, I got an RSVP from a friend & from a slacker bridesmaid yesterday and that made me feel a little more cared about. :o)
Today, I'm having lunch with the husband-in-Iraq-and-three-kids-at-home bridesmaid! I'm also meeting with our photographer along with my FMIL, who is a college professor and off for the summer, so she comes to most of my appointments. This guy has been taking all my pictures literally since I was born (baby pictures, family pictures, senior pictures, etc.) so his expertise, knowledge, and style are just not an issue. We just need to go over timing (what pictures to take when) and my list of must-take pictures. Also, my sister is his summer intern and also a bridesmaid (small world) so I want to talk about what she'll be doing. (She wants to take pictures, I am not making her!)
Lastly, since I'm three weeks out, the inability to sleep and the wedding dreams have started! Last night in the dream, our tent wasn't set up the way I wanted it, people weren't there on time, and the photographer didn't show up to the ceremony. Oh, and the wedding before ours refused to leave the bridal dressing room area and really messed it up. Now, none of this is possible since my master and mistress of ceremonies will make sure my set-up is right, my friends and family are very punctual considerate people, my photographer is a professional and even in the event of an emergency my sister is his intern and would be there, and there IS no wedding before mine, unless you count the day before! It's just idle freaking out and I know it's totally normal.
I wish I was one of those brides who can't eat for the stress. Me, sleep is the problem. At least not eating would have a positive, not an adverse, effect on my appearance. ;o) |
